Key to Ag Success

The article interviews Dan Glickman. He said he feels the average consumer is confident in the foods they eat on a daily basis. The panel was “Tackling Humanity’s Great Challenges: A Pathway for Research to 2030”. The main problem with the scientists talking to each other is they they are not communicating these ideas with the public. McDonald’s now serves apples in their happy meals. The article talked about developing countries nutrition deficits being an obstacle or problem. Two ARS discoveries are Xanthan gum and DEET. There is about a 10 year gap between discovery and putting it into action. Private funders prefer their money go to education instead of research.

Opportunities

An opportunity that I passed up and probably should have taken was playing football at least through my senior year if not the rest of high school. I made the decision not to play football this year because of an offer to run grain cart for a buddy’s farm while he was at college. With all the rain this year they didn’t get to combining until late and by then my buddy’s cousin was able to go work so that offer kinda fell through. By the time I found out I wasn’t gonna be able to run grain cart the season was almost over and it was too late to join. I wish now that I had joined at the beginning of the season.

Bad Habits

I feel a habit everyone could go without is texting and driving. I’m guilty of this myself. It isn’t a good idea and can be very dangerous. A bad habit I have personally is procrastination. I don’t like to do anything right away. I’m actually surprised I’m doing this right now. The only way I can quit procrastinating is to just start doing stuff right away. A habit my family has is that we tend to let stuff lay around the house. If we started getting on each other’s case about it I feel we could break this habit. I haven’t heard the whole taking 7 days to make a habit thing but I could believe it. I also think it could take longer for some people and it could also happen quicker.

Saying Thank You

There are a few ways to say “Thank You” without actually saying it. We can do all kinds of things to show our appreciation to others who have helped us. We can do little things for them like help them with little chores or do them a favor. I would say I tend to take my family for granted. They have been there the whole time and sometimes I forget that they’re on my team and want me to succeed. When I help someone and they seem to not care it makes me think they don’t want my help and don’t appreciate what I try to do for them. Three people that have helped me in my life are my mom, my dad, and my good friend Dalton. My mom helps me with little things when I need it. My dad helped me learn how to act and work like a man. My friend Dalton and his family have given me opportunities to learn how to do different things that I haven’t had the chance to do other wise. I try to help my mom when she asks. When in public I try to act mature and like a grown up to make my dad proud. I like to help Dalton and his family with things like raking hay and throwing bales.

Mega Millions

If I had an extra $1000 a month I would save it until I could afford a nicer reasonable pickup. Then I would use it for some other little things and save the rest for college.

Now if I won the mega million things would be different. I would set myself up to always have money and never go broke. I would buy a lot of land and some cattle so I could cowboy for the rest of my life. I would give money to everybody who ever helped me when I needed. Anybody that would want to be my friend now that I have money would be out of luck. I would go on a bunch of big hunts and go to every major rodeo in North America.

Not to mess with

People I wouldn’t want to mess with would be people in high places. They have they money to do all sorts of things to ruin what you’ve done in your life. The types of people that get on my nerves are liars. What is so hard about telling the truth? They lie about the littlest and random things. Whats the point? An experience in which I was uncomfortable would be hanging out with the wrong people. This was not my type of people and I didn’t enjoy being with them.

Phone addiction

I guess I’m sort of addicted to my phone but not majorly. This problem changes throughout the year as I get more and less busy with other things like work and activities. Our family doesn’t really have a problem with this phone addiction. We don’t really have rules about the phones at the table we usually just do not use them. We wait to be done eating before we go do our own thing.

GMO Labeling

GMO is short for Genetically Modified Organisms. Big companies don’t want the labeling while smaller companies do. They believe that GMOs should be labeled because some people do not want to consume them. Some believe there is no reason to label these GMOs because they are safe and companies have been hiding what goes into our food for decades. I could go both ways with this argument. I understand wanting to know what I eat but also if it is safe I don’t really care. There are 7 GMO crops: corn, soybeans, canola, cotton, alfalfa, sugar beats, papaya, and squash.

Food for 9 Billion People

  1. What do you think is the most effective way to feed the 9 billion people in 2050 and why?

I think if we waste less food and produce more we could provide enough food for the extra people. If we ship the excess food to other countries while producing  more we could feed 9 billion people.

  1. What are two things you agreed with that you read in the articles? Why do you agree?

I agreed with the need to produce more food because more people means more food is needed. I also agree with the fact that a lot of food is wasted and could be used to feed other people.

  1. What is at least one thing you disagreed with that was written in the articles? Why do you disagree?

I don’t really agree with the fact that we already produce enough food to feed 9 billion people when we already have starving people now.

Being Alone

How I spend my alone time depends on what the day is like and what i have to do later. If it is nice and I’m not busy I will ride my horses or something. If I only have a little time or its not nice outside I will usually watch tv for a little bit. Sometimes I will take a little nap before finding something to do.

I’ve never felt truly lonely. I have been bored because I was alone but not really lonely. In the spring when most of my friends were at track I would get bored and stuff because I had no one to hang out and do stuff with. I would have to find stuff to do on my own.
